"Lessons Learned": A Career Geologist Shares His Story This Week
- Jan 15, 2018
This week our distinguished speaker is Mark Wojna, Vice President of Exploration for Upstream Exploration, LLC. HIs talk is titled “Reflections on a 32 Year Career as an Oil and Gas Geologist Exploring the Gulf Coast”
This talk will review the 30 year career path of an oil and gas geologist working for privately owned, independent oil and gas companies exploring the federal and state waters offshore Louisiana and the onshore Gulf Coast. Lessons learned and advice will be shared for future geologists. A broad overview on the geology of the Middle Miocene deep-water trend located in shallow state waters of Louisiana will be presented. A brief discussion of future employment trends and opportunities will also be shared.
Wojna earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Michigan State University in 1982 and his Master of Science in Geology from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1985. He has 31 years of industry experience.
Prior to joining Upstream, Wojna was Exploration Manager for Century Exploration New Orleans from 2008 to 2015. He joined Century in 1986 and the majority of his entire career was spent at Century, focused on oil and gas exploration and development in the federal and state waters of the Gulf of Mexico and onshore Louisiana. He is a proven oil and gas finder in the region and his primary responsibilities are to generate new exploration and development growth opportunities with his exploration team.
Wojna has successfully explored and developed the Plio-Pliestocene trends in the Gulf of Mexico and developed several salt domes and the Miocene trend in South Louisiana. He was instrumental in the development of Century’s prolific success in the geopressured Middle Miocene trend in Breton Sound. Wojna published a paper documenting his work in the Breton Sound 53 Field in the Oil & Gas Fields of South Louisiana, 2010 New Orleans Geological Society Guidebook, which summarized the largest discoveries in South Louisiana since the year 2000.
