Congratulations to the EES 2021 Fall Semester Undergraduate Award Winners!

Warren W. and Anneliese C. Wood Undergraduate Research Award

This award is made possible through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Wood to support undergraduate student-led research projects conducted under the mentorship of faculty in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.  Dr. Wood is a graduate of Michigan State University, receiving B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees from the then Department of Geology.

Project Title: "A magmatic discontinuity during rifting- what happened at Kalakol in the East African Rift?"

Research Mentor: Tyrone Rooney

Award Amount: $2,500
 

The award will support major and trace element analysis of Kalakol basalts to help determine the conditions of the magma chamber at the time of crystal growth.

Project Title: "Liquid Composition Analysis of Mount Kenya Samples to Constrain Mantle Conditions in Kenya"

Research Mentor: Tyrone Rooney

Award Amount: $2,500

The award will support major and trace element analysis of rocks from Mt. Kenya to obtain a greater understanding of the mantle processes in the region.


Earth and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Travel Award

This award is made possible through the generosity of Alumni and friends of the Department to support undergraduate travel to professional meetings to present the results of their research or to defray travel costs to off-campus field courses (primarily intended for study abroad).

Award Amount: $500

Pletcher and her research partner will be presenting on research that also won the AGU Freilich Visualization Competition. Their work improves real-time monitoring of environmental proxies relevant to algal events to aid in cost-effective, timely, and informed decision making for lake management.
