Dr. Warren W. Wood Awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award

Our very own Dr. Warren W. Wood has been selected to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award! The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to those who have differentiated themselves by obtaining the highest level of professional accomplishment, and who possess the utmost integrity and character to positively reflect and enhance the prestige of Michigan State University. This award is among the highest recognition awarded by the MSU Alumni Office on behalf of the university, and will be presented on November 1, 2024 at the MSU Alumni Grand Awards ceremony.

Warren spent his professional career in public service first as a geophysicist for the Michigan State Highway Department 1961-63; Hydrogeologist United States Geological Survey 1965-2003; Christensen Fellow at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, Univ. UK 1998-2004; John Hannah Professor of Integrative Studies at Michigan State University 2003-2010; and Visiting Professor at MSU since 2010. Warren’s published research of over 100 peer reviewed journal articles, over 20 editorials or Op Ed pieces on a variety of groundwater related topics plus numerous US Geological Survey and State of Michigan geophysical Highway publications. In his hydrogeology investigations, Warren utilized an approach that exploited field experiments and observations of groundwater flow, solute, and isotope geochemistry to resolve challenging, long-standing problems in the disparate fields of hydrogeology, economic geology, climate change, and geomorphology.  Warren specialized in hydrogeology of arid areas of the world including western United States, Australia, Botswana, China, Israel, Jordan, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Republic of South Africa, Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates.

Warren was an invited lecturer at over 150 universities in North America, Botswana, China, England, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Jordon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, South Africa, and UAE. He served as adjunct professor at China University of Geoscience, Beijing, China; University of Nebraska; King Fahad University for Petroleum and Minerals Dhahran, Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain UAE and University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada. He was an external reviewer for Ph.D. candidates. at universities of Arizona; Flinders, Australia; Oxford, UK; Queens (UK); Texas; Texas Tech; Utah; Waterloo; and Yale. Warren gave the 2002 commence address at Virginia Tech Geoscience Department and served on the committees of several master’s and Ph.D. candidates in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Warren is currently finishing an introductory textbook on hydrogeochemistry and has recently published four seminal papers using AI in evaluating global groundwater solute flux.

Warren has been  active in professional societies where he served on numerous science groups and committees including the Board of Directors of the National Ground Water Association and the American Ground Water Trust; He was also Editor-in-Chief of Ground Water and associate editor of several journals; Chairman of the Hydrogeologic Division of the Geological Society of America; Birdsall Lecturer, Geological Society of America; National Research Council (NAS) panel on desalinization; Chair of the annual technical conference for National Ground Water Association, Geological Society of America, and America Geophysical Union and advisor to the International Groundwater Project.

Warren testified before U.S. Congress on the impact of nuclear waste disposal on water resources, briefed the Secretary of Interior, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency on role of hydrogeology in nuclear waste disposal.  He briefed the Crown Princes of Jordan and Emirates of Abu Dhabi on their respective countries water resources.  For his scientific contribution Wood has been awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the U. S. Department of Interior; M. King Hubbert Medal by the National Ground Water Association; Distinguished Service Award, Geological Society of America; Keith Anderson Award, Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers; the Bergquist Medal, Department of Earth and Environmental Science, MSU; and Elected Fellow of the Geological Society of America.

Wood was raised in the small southwestern Michigan town of Lawton.  He graduated from Jonesville High School and attended Michigan State University intermittently from 1955 to 1969 obtaining BS, MS, and Ph.D. in the Department of Geology.(He was asked to leave for a year after being involved in exuberance celebration after a MSU basketball win against Kentucky in 1957) Warren is an auto enthusiast and did club racing with his Porsche and Aston Martin at numerous tracks in the US and Canada.  He is an amateur architect who designed, built, and furnished a mid-century modern summer cabin on a lake in northern Ontario, is an avid collector of 18th and 19th century scientific instruments and is a hiker, canoeist, and sailor. Warren and his wife Anneliese are enthusiastic supporters of Michigan State University at the Shaw donation level. They establish an endowed fund to support undergraduate research; donated a large 35-ton specimen of Banded Iron Formation (BIF) in front of the Natural Science building; “Art from Space” photos in the department; initiation of the student “Coffee with the Professors” EES departmental coffee hour; and provide a number of individual unrestricted research grants to faculty.
